Benefits of Yoga

I have many friends that do yoga on a regular basis. I have always wondered what benefits they get from doing yoga other than being able to hold strange poses for an unnaturally long time. I have heard that it is good for the mind as well. Doing some research has really opened my eyes to the benefits of yoga on your mind, your body, and even on your breathing. It can help improve your health and your well-being, especially in these times of economic and family stress.

A major benefit of yoga is physical. Yoga improves your flexibility. – The stretching that you engage in during every practice helps lengthen and stretch muscles, which helps reduce the risk of injuries.

It helps to improve your balance. – The majority of yoga practices include some type of balancing in the poses. A significant number of people, especially as they began to get older, start to have problems with balance, which can lead to major injuries due to falls. By having a greater sense of balance, you are able to move more easily and safely.

If you use yoga to loosen up muscles you may find that you have reduced pain in your muscles. Tension and strain can cause pain and by regularly adding yoga to your weekly workout schedule you will find that the breathing techniques, and relaxation can help to alleviate pain.

Of all the benefits that most people are looking for muscle toning, has to be at the top of the list. Yoga will help not only strengthen your muscles but will increase blood flow which will build your endurance and stamina.

I would have never expected that it could also increase energy. Stress causes tension which can really zap your energy. By using the techniques that are learned doing yoga you will help to increase your level of energy that can benefit you in your job and busy life.

Ok now I know I just said that you get increased energy, but you can also get relaxation from yoga. You will learn how to breath deeply, from the bottom of your diaphragm which will allow you to get more oxygen. When you are not receiving enough oxygen you can suffer from more anxiety, which causes stress, and leads to more tension. Learning to breath deeply you will allow more oxygen to get to all of your cells, and will relax you and allow you to get a better nights sleep.

When you relax your mind your body also becomes relaxed and vice versa. Yoga instructors recommend that you end all of your yoga excercise with a relaxation pose, as it is one of the most important poses in your routine.

Another benefit of yoga is mental.

If you find your mind wandering, and you don’t seem to have the focus that you once had, yoga may be what you are looking for. When you are doing yoga focus becomes important because you must concentrate on your breathing and your pose. That is why it is important to be in an enviroment that will promote your mind to focus to learn to move your mind past any distractions and to give total attention to your current objective. This training can be used in your daily life to focus on the task at hand and to put all distractions and whatever else is going on in your life in the background. You will also be able to put a more positive force in action when you are able to complete tasks more quickly and effectively with this increased focus, and be able to be more productive.

There are several different types of yoga, so you should do some research and learn which one might suit your purposes, and your physical capabilities.
